SharePoint 2013 Branding and Responsive Web Development and Bootstrap 3

I am pleased to say that the response to my first book on branding SharePoint 2013 and Responsive Design, Pro SharePoint 2013 Branding and Responsive Web Development (Apress 2013), has been overwhelming positive. Thank you everyone for your kind words and I am extremely happy to know that this book has been helping you with your branding projects. It has been a little weird to see the book code in the wild, but again, very glad this has helped.

One of the issues with writing a technology book is that as soon as the ink has dried, your book is out of date. As much as I and my co-authors tried, I knew it was only a matter of time before the content was not as relevant. Our first step to combat this was to create a Github project so we could provide updated source code. Next, we set up and now maintain a SPYam group over at Yammer. Cloudshare has also helped us out by allowing us to create a snapshot of a fully functional version of the solutions we create in our book, available to you, but that we could also update.

icon-b3Now, not a few months out of the gate and the inevitable happened. We built our solutions around Twitter Bootstrap (v2), a very popular and well supported responsive framework. Well, they just released a new version of Bootstrap, Bootstrap 3. It is a complete rewrite of Bootstrap from the ground up, and let me tell you, it is nice. It is mobile first and contains a 12 column grid selectable for mobile, tablet, desktop and large desktop. Very nice stuff.

The problem? We need a new version of our book’s site to keep up with the times!

This does not in any way mean that the book is already out of date as the theories and solutions we provide are still just as useful now as before. It is just the end site we end up creating in the book is now using an older version of Bootstrap.

What We Have to Offer

We just released a new version of the website created in the book in multiple versions. First, we created a new HTML prototype of the Specter Group site using B3. We then created the SharePoint branding assets that use this new HTML prototype as its base. Finally we updated the Cloudshare snapshot to include not only the original version of the Specter Group solution, but also a working SharePoint 2013 demo of the Specter Group site leveraging the mobile first Bootstrap 3 framework.

Comments

  1. Thank you Eric for taking the time to put these updates together for us!

  2. I got the demo site configured in cloudshare, but it does not look like anything is configured.
